First CD

On this date in 1979 The compact disc is presented to the publicThe CD was developed by Philips and Sony. The companies later collaborated to produce a standard format and CD players.

I saw this when looking at March’s special days when thinking about things to blog about. It got me thinking. I was 10 years old in 1979, but I very fondly remember (and still own) the first CD I bought with my own money a few years later (1981) — I even bought a portable CD player. The album: I Love Rock n’ Roll, by Joan Jett and The Blackhearts.

I still listened mostly to vinyl. But this CD got lots of play because it was “my” music. I’d sit alone in my room wearing out the batteries on the player every few weeks because I played the whole CD beginning to end so often. Wearing headphones because I shared a room with my younger sister, I often fell asleep to the music playing in my ears.

What was your first music on CD?
